Newcastle United misfit Achraf Lazaar could finally be on his way out of St James’ Park, with Italian side Cagliari interested in his services, according to Gianluigi Lonari.

The Italian journalist revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Thursday, claiming that the Serie A side are considering bringing the 27-year-old back to Italy.

Lazaar enjoyed the finest spell of his career on the peninsula, starring for Varese and Palermo before making the move to Tyneside in 2016.

He has essentially been anonymous since joining the Magpies, with manager Rafael Benitez showing no interest in him whatsoever.

Good move for Newcastle?

Yes, for the love of God, yes. It has long since been time that Newcastle got rid of Lazaar, with the player having made just ten appearances throughout the entirety of his time at St James’ Park. He is essentially a non-factor at this moment in time, and only serves to deplete the club’s resources. He is being paid to do next to nothing and that’s why the club need to get rid of him. Italy appears to be the most likely destination given his prior success there, and the big thing is whether the Magpies can convince someone to take Lazaar off their hands. If Cagliari are interested in doing that then more power to them, let’s get on with it as quickly as possible because it’s clear that the Moroccan has no future with Newcastle.

Likely to happen?

We’ve seen teams supposedly interested in Lazaar before, only for his move away to break down, so it’s hard to put too much faith in this one. Again, Italy does seem like the place he’ll end up when he does leave, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
