Rio Ferdinand has claimed Liverpool defensive leader Virgil van Dijk would be the ideal Manchester United signing.

In a Q&A on his personal Twitter account, the United legend was asked which player, if any, he would recruit for the Premier League champions.

Ferdinand replied he would go for Van Dijk, explaining he plays in “the position we’re in most need”.

OPINION

Firstly, great choice, Rio. Secondly, there is not a chance on earth of it ever happening. Sadly for Man United fans who have watched with ever-increasing envy at the consistent brilliance of the Premier League’s outstanding defender. Transfers between Liverpool and United just don’t happen and, even if they did, the Merseyside giants would never let him go. Van Dijk isn’t just the best in his position in the English league, he is probably the outstanding centre-back in the world right now. The Dutch colossus has transformed Liverpool’s back line from vulnerable to near-impregnable, notwithstanding the recent three goals shipped in against Crystal Palace. Brilliant in the air, fast enough to keep up with speed machine Adama Traore on the ground, technically brilliant and a superb reader of the game, Van Dijk is a player who has found his perfect home at Anfield. There is no chance of him relocating to another one any time soon.
