On the day Liverpool offloaded Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth for £19million rising to a potential £25million, anything seems possible. That surely couldn’t mean the Merseyside giants reigniting their summer-of-2018 pursuit of Nabil Fekir, could it? Well, that was the widespread response from many Liverpool fans on social media after it was reported by the Get French Football News site that Fekir has been omitted from the Lyon 18-man squad to face lower-league outfit Bourges Foot in a Coupe de France tie. It is said the attacking midfielder is not injured and, suggestively, there has been “no explanation” given for his absence.

That has been enough to get the Anfield faithful dreaming again, after they were left shattered when the France international underwent a medical last summer with Liverpool but the transfer subsequently collapsed amid reports the two clubs could not agree a fee. While there may be a perfectly plausible explanation as to why Fekir has been omitted by Lyon, this is transfer window time and the Merseyside giants suddenly have a wad of new cash in their pockets. Supporters are getting excited.
