Everton’s embarrassing 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Millwall on Saturday evening not only saw the club waste a valuable opportunity to push on for a first piece of silverware since 1995, but also highlighted a key issue that continues to plague the Toffees.

Marco Silva’s side had just three shots target at the Den, and while the might have scored two of them, creating a lack of clearcut chances would ultimately come back to haunt them, with the Lions finding a stoppage time winner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin led the line, and while the England youth international has the potential to kick on and become a top level striker, at the moment he is too far from the finished article to be given the responsibility of chief goalscorer.

Similarly, for all he hit double figures for the season last night, Richarlison doesn’t look comfortable as a conventional number nine, and Everton must be starting to think that they must sign a forward this month if they are to prevent their season from going off the rails entirely.

According to respected journalist Alan Nixon, RB Leipzig would be willing to part with Jean-Kevin Augustin this month, and the Blues must make him their top priority.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, Nixon suggested that the Bundesliga side would be willing to take less than the £40m initially being demanded for his services – with the Sun having claimed Everton had been in touch for his capture previously.

The 21-year-old French youth international has eight goals in all competitions so far this season, but is approaching a point in his career where a regular starting berth is a necessity to really accelerate his development.

A move to Goodison Park would surely give him that, because god knows Everton have to bring in a decent striker and his arrival would get many of the Goodison Park faithful erupting at the ambition shown with his capture.
