Derby have taken a late “shock” interest in getting Matthew Pennington on loan, according to the Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon.

Nixon made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Thursday afternoon.

The 6’1″ enforcer is currently on loan with Ipswich and Nixon said the move would be possible but difficult.

OPINION

We’re not sure this one will have legs. Pennington has been a regular starter at Ipswich, in fact he’s played in all of their games bar one when he was suspended. The one factor that is in Derby’s favour is that Ipswich are currently rock bottom of the Championship, with Derby a much more competitive club, in sixth and looking for automatic promotion back to the Premier League. Everton might think that Pennington would do better under Frank Lampard and in a team that’s oozing with quality, but it wouldn’t seem very fair on Ipswich. Also, he’s guaranteed game time at Ipswich, and if they moved him to Derby just for him to sit on the bench, it would be a really bad move. Nixon says it would be difficult but possible and this is one to watch, especially for nervous Ipswich fans. Losing Pennington when they’re seven points off safety in the Championship would really make them wish they hadn’t woken up this morning.
