Newcastle United fans have not had much to celebrate this season and saw their hopes of a positive FA Cup run extinguished on Saturday in a dire performance at home to Watford.

With all eyes now firmly on the Premier League, champions Manchester City the next side to visit St James’ Park in a clash which will have the Toon Army looking through their fingers in fear, the supporters will simply be hoping that their side carries out some business before the end of the January transfer window in a bid to survive in the top flight.

Pundits have been mixed in their analysis of what is going on on Tyneside this season, the likes of Rio Ferdinand coming under heavy fire from fans for his defence of Mike Ashley, and many of the same supporters will find their blood boiling once again as Tony Cascarino destroys the issues at the club.

Writing in his Times column, the former striker said: “You know you’re in trouble when your opponents name a second-string team and you still can’t get near them.

“The lack of quality in Rafa Benítez’s squad is mind-boggling and you have got to feel sorry for those 50,000 supporters who turn up to St James’ Park week in, week out to watch their team lose.”

Cascarino is echoing exactly what the fans at Newcastle are saying week in, week out but there is little doubting that his words of sympathy will have their rage building towards Mike Ashley once again.

It is a sad state of affairs when the atmosphere at such a historical club is nothing short of poisonous and for all the sympathies of pundits and rival fans, the Toon Army want action.

Boycotts and protests have been mooted among those on social media and reading how they are viewed from outside the bubble might be enough for something to happen.
