Charlie Miller believes that Steven Davis will be a “fantastic” addition for Rangers this month with the Southampton midfielder reportedly closing in on a return to Ibrox.

The Scottish Sun has reported that the 34-year-old has agreed an 18-month deal with the Light Blues worth £12,000-a-week and that Steven Gerrard’s first January signing should be wrapped up in the next few days.

Former Ibrox attacker Miller is blown away by the idea of Davis finally returning to Govan seven years after originally leaving for Southampton, but now he is sending a message to the board to urge them to continue helping Gerrard improve his squad this month.

“Rangers are going to need to bring in a few bodies in the transfer window this month, but Steven Davis coming in would be a brilliant signing,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

He added: “He might not be playing now but I have no doubt he would be a fantastic signing for Rangers and the fans would get right behind him.

“Davis won trophies in his first spell and younger boys in the team will learn from a guy like him.

“Getting Davis back will give the fans a lift, but I would like to see the board getting behind the manager and adding a couple more to help the club in the title race.

“Celtic will spend money in this window because they can see how close it is and Rangers have to respond to that.”

OPINION

Davis will definitely be a good signing for Rangers and he has taken a big pay cut in order to return to Ibrox, so you know that he has his heart set on this move and will give 100 per cent in every game. Gerrard’s midfield looked very good against Celtic last week. Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Ross McCrorie looked like the dream trio going forward thanks to a fine performance by all three, however Davis will have to go straight into the starting line-up because he is a cut above all of them. Who will be dropped for the Saints midfielder though? He’s hardly a defensive midfielder like McCrorie, so his spot could be safe. It would have to be Jack or Arfield that is dropped for the Northern Ireland international, and that is a near-impossible decision for Gerrard to make. It may be that he ends up dropping McCrorie in favour of a more attack-minded midfield. Rangers fans will probably be happy with that against sides they are expected to win against.
