Huddersfield have approached Newcastle United about signing winger Jacob Murphy on loan, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez are due to hold talks about Murphy’s future at St James’ Park once the Magpies owner returns from a “festive break”.

It is understood that Derby are also interested in signing the 23-year-old attacker on loan this month.

Good move for Newcastle?

Benitez should not bother letting Murphy leave unless it is on a permanent deal, so the club can at least make some money off him then.

The former Norwich winger is earning £25,000-a-week (Spotrac) on his deal at St James’ Park so it would not be a major boost to just get him off the wagebill.

If Huddersfield really want Murphy they should pay to buy him, otherwise Newcastle may as well leave him as back-up to the first team.

Likely to happen?

Murphy may want to press for this move because he is not playing much football for the Tyneside club at the moment.

He has only made nine appearances in all competitions this season, so it is in his best interest to try and secure a move away from St James’ Park before the end of the month.

David Wagner should be able to offer him more first team football at the John Smith’s, so if Murphy wants this move then it will probably happen, even if it is not the best thing for Newcastle.
