John Hartson has admitted that Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis are “quality additions” for Rangers, but he still believes that Celtic are in pole position to win the Scottish Premiership title this season.

The two Old Firm rivals went into the winter break level on points at the top of the table, with the Bhoys leading the way by goal difference despite losing 1-0 at Ibrox last month.

Steven Gerrard has worked hard in the transfer market since then, signing Premier League veterans Defoe and Davis on loan deals.

Hartson says that they are two top signings, however he is still backing his old side Celtic to win the league.

“There is also the fact that Celtic are very much in a title race,” Hartson said on the Glasgow Evening Times website.

“There is a lot been said about the business that Rangers have done in the window and you have to applaud the signings of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis – they are quality additions.

“But I still think that Celtic are in the driving seat.”

OPINION

Rangers have gotten stronger over the winter break. Defoe may be 36-years-old, but he is bound to shine in the Scottish Premiership and if Gerrard rotates between him and Alfredo Morelos up front, then the Light Blues are bound to be scoring goals on a regular basis. Davis will add a lot of experience and leadership to the midfield. The 34-year-old has joined on loan from Southampton and will surely walk straight into the Gers’ starting line-up once they are back in league action. On Friday night, Rangers have a trip to Cowdenbeath for their first Scottish Cup fixture of the season. Gerrard is unlikely to name a full-strength side for that game, but he is bound to give Defoe and Davis their first games since signing so that they can get the feel of playing for the club before league action resumes. Rangers face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park next Wednesday night. That is bound to be a cracker.
