West Brom manager Darren Moore is set to give Giles Barnes a chance to re-join the club in what has been called a “shock” move by Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Barnes spent a season at the Hawthorns in 2010-2011 before joining Doncaster and then jetting off to the MLS.

The 30-year-old striker is a Jamaica international with three goals in 19 caps.

He made 28 appearances for West Brom but didn’t score a single goal, but was once called “the next Paul Gascoigne”.

He played 130 times for Houston, scoring 33 goals and registering 13 assists.

OPINION

We’re really not sure what West Brom fans are going to make of this. Actually, we are and it’s not going to make for pretty reading. Barnes didn’t set the world on fire at the Hawthorns on his last visit. In fact, he didn’t manage to score a single goal before heading to try his luck at Doncaster. He only scored one goal there in 36 games before he jetted off to the MLS where he was a bit more successful. The striker, who can also play in midfield, wants to return to England and he’s being put through his paces by Moore ahead of a potential deal. Could he play a part in the Baggies’ promotion push? That’s unlikely and we’re not quite sure whether this has legs or whether Moore is just putting an old player through his paces out of curiosity, West Brom fans will be hoping he’s got the capacity to surprise them if a deal is struck.
