Alfredo Morelos has been given an extended break by Steven Gerrard as a “reward”, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

That is the reason he hasn’t travelled to the Tenerife training camp with the rest of his teammates.

It had been reported that Morelos had not travelled, leading to speculation that he might be the subject of a transfer this January.

However, that seems wide of the mark, with Downie reporting that he will join up with the group in the next 24 hours.

OPINION

With Jermain Defoe arriving from Bournemouth there’s bound to be renewed speculation about the future of Alfredo Morelos. Mark Allen said today that he would be going nowhere, but everyone knows that he has a price and that if a club offer around £15million, he would be sold. That doesn’t seem likely at the moment and Rangers fans who were panicking about him not being in Tenerife can relax – for now at least. Morelos is supposed to be hooking up with his teammates in 24 hours and if that doesn’t happen then it might be there’s more to this story than meets the eye. For now at least though, Rangers fans can stand down. Rangers fans will definitely be hoping that both strikers stay at Ibrox this January. In Morelos and Defoe they arguably have the two best strikers playing in Scottish football at the moment and the two of them could fire Rangers to their 55th title win if they both stay fit and in top form.
