Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam has admitted that a return to Rangers would “absolutely” interest him if the opportunity was to arise.

The Scottish Sun has recently reported that Hearts are lining up a move for the 33-year-old this month with him looking as though he will be on his way out of Stoke.

It is understood that left-footed Adam is a “high-earner” at the Bet365 and Gary Rowett wants to get him off the wage bill.

Now, Adam has admitted that he is frustrated with life in the English Championship, having only made three league appearances this season, and he says that a return to Ibrox is something that would interest him.

“At the moment I am still contracted to Stoke but I want to play and hopefully there are opportunities during the window to play somewhere,” Adam said, as quoted by the Scotsman.

“The Rangers thing is something that it would interest me. Absolutely. I have been back more times this season than in the last four or five years. I can see it is going in the right direction.”

He added: “But at the moment there is nothing to it. We are talking up something that is not there but everyone knows I started my career at Rangers, I played in front of 50,000 with the pressure.

“It is something I’d relish and enjoy. I want to play.

“I have played three games for Stoke so it has been frustrating so whoever it may be, I am ready to go and want to contribute.”

OPINION

If Adam was willing to play for free, Rangers should not entertain the idea of signing the midfield enforcer because he is simply not good enough for their squad anymore. The Scottish veteran has been sitting on the fringes of a poor Stoke side this season, so there’s no way that he is going to be anywhere near the level of player he was in his earlier days at the Potters. Rangers already seem to be getting one midfielder signing wrapped up this month anyway. Steven Davis has been widely reported to be on his way back to Ibrox, so once he has arrived, the Gers may be better off just trying to get themselves an attack-minded playmaker rather than another deep-sitting player like Adam. The defensive midfielder is probably no better than Ross McCrorie, who was superb against Celtic, and Lassana Coulibaly, who has shown shades of potential at times.
