OPINION
The stats mask a lot for Gylfi Sigurdsson this season. The Everton man had been involved in 11 goals and created a chance every 12 passes prior to the Toffees meeting with Southampton on Saturday, and then he managed to grab a consolation late on in that match too. The reality, however, is that the Icelandic international has been poor for large parts of the campaign, and is emblematic of the kind of problems that are plaguing the Blues under Marco Silva. On his day, the 29-year-old is sublime, but far too often he misplaces passes and is wasteful in possession. This was the case against a reinvigorated Saints side, as the Toffees slipped to a 2-1 defeat. With everyone around failing to turn up around him, and with his late goal, perhaps some of the cracks of the playmaker’s performance will be papered over, but it is about time that he was held to account for a poor campaign.

Goal! Gylfi Sigurdsson pulls one back, but it doesn’t excuse the fact he’s played horrendously for weeks! 2-1! #SOUEVE
