Sir Kenny Dalglish has been blown away by Rangers’ swoop for Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe.

Sky Sports has reported that Defoe, 36, has completed a medical with the Light Blues ahead of joining them on an 18-month loan.

It is understood that the former West Ham and Tottenham striker agreed personal terms with the Glasgow giants earlier this week and he is now expected to join up with Steven Gerrard’s squad at their winter training camp in Tenerife on Monday.

Celtic and Liverpool legend Dalglish has admitted that Rangers have played a blinder to agree a deal with Defoe, who he claims will bang in the goals in the Scottish Premiership.

“To have captured Jermain Defoe on loan from Bournemouth is brilliant business,” Dalglish said on the Sunday Post website.

“He may well want one or two more. But Steven isn’t under pressure to sell and that has to be a positive for him.

“Jermain may well be 36 and have had a number of clubs during his career, but I’m certain there will still be a hunger and burning desire within him to bring silverware to Ibrox.

“He will score plenty of goals.

“Make no mistake, Rangers being able to attract the former England striker will have had plenty to do with Steven.

“He has a great relationship with players from his club and international career.

“He had an excellent career as a footballer and his CV isn’t too bad, is it?”

OPINION

Defoe will be an excellent signing for Rangers and one of the biggest that Scotland has seen in a long, long time. It is such a big signing that even Chris Sutton is worried that Celtic may lose out in the race to win the Scottish Premiership title. Defoe is a proven goalscorer. He may not have been as prolific in the Premier League lately, but that doesn’t mean that he will struggle to find the back of the net in Scotland. Kris Boyd was top scorer last season and Kenny Miller has been in good form at Dundee, so it’s not a league that the older footballer struggles in. Celtic should be very worried by the business that the Gers are doing this month and they have to respond if they want to win the title. Oliver Burke is a poor signing after he joined on loan from West Brom. He couldn’t even get on the bench at the Championship club while Defoe was only failing to get in the Bournemouth team because Callum Wilson has been on fire.
