BT Sport host Darrell Currie has claimed that Portsmouth’s Jack Whatmough would be a “good acquisition” for either Rangers or Celtic.

The Sun reported on Tuesday that the two Old Firm rivals were in the hunt to sign the 22-year-old centre-back, as well as Aberdeen.

His contract expires at the end of the season and it is understood that Rangers and Celtic could sign him up for a minimal compensation fee in the summer.

Currie has been waxing lyrical about Whatmough, who has been key for League One leaders Pompey this season, and believes that any of the three Scottish sides would be getting themselves a solid signing.

“There’s talk Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen are all interested in Portsmouth centre back Jack Whatmough. He’s out of contract in summer and has excelled at Pompey. Big, strong, good in the air… would be a good acquisition,” he said via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday.

OPINION

Whatmough has been good in England’s League One for Portsmouth this season, but will he be an improvement on anything that Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers already have in Glasgow? Both managers will need to add to their defence at some point in 2019. Joe Worrall’s loan deal at Ibrox expires at the end of the season while Gareth McAuley’s contract ends. Celtic have a similar issue as Filip Benkovic will return to Leicester in the summer and Dedryck Boyata looks unlikely to extend his rapidly expiring contract. Whatmough is hardly a first-team pick for either side, but he could be good cover. If he’s available on the cheap then he might be a worthwhile signing, but he seems to be the level of signing that Aberdeen should be after. Derek McInnes may find himself without Scott McKenna for next season, so Whatmough could be a good replacement for him.
