Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is looking to find a way to tear up the summer loan deal of winger Andre Green and see him return to the club for the second half of the season, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Villa boss is keen to boost his options up top and believes that Green’s pace and power could make the difference in the hunt for a top six finish, with the 20-year-old currently on loan at Portsmouth where he has scored five goals in 14 appearances.

It is stated that a decision on Green will be made next week as Smith faces the prospect of losing Tammy Abraham back to Chelsea, with Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett said to be desperate to keep the youngster on the south coast.

Opinion

While Green is no doubt a popular figure at Villa Park, having come through the youth system to make his name as a future star, is he really the answer to Villa’s hopes of success this season? His record in League One is pretty average and he has not been playing on a regular basis, so what makes Smith think that he can make the difference a division up? With the likes of Jonathan Kodjia, Albert Adomah, Anwar El Ghazi and Yannick Bolasie already populating the squad, Green is going to face a serious fight for any sort of meaningful action, unless he is being eyed up for a run as a centre forward. That would be another gamble altogether and one which could end in tears for the Villans. Green has a lot of work to do before he is worthy of a first team role at Villa and this is not going to do his future much good. A questionable plot from Smith.
