Beijing Guoan open talks for Dembele

|

Tottenham have opened talks with Chinese club Beijing Guoan to sell Moussa Dembele, according to the Daily Mail.

The Belgian international has six months left on his contract in London, and it is understood that Spurs are willing to let him go this winter to free up funds and space in their squad.

The 31-year-old has not featured in the club’s last 10 Premier League matches as he recovers from an ankle injury, and could be set for a lucrative pay day in China as his career begins to wind down.

Dembele’s ongoing injury problems have meant that he has seen his prominence in the Spurs squad wane in recent years, and it is understood that he considers the physical demands of the Premier League too much to handle.

Good move for Tottenham?

Dembele has been a wonderful player for Spurs over the years but it’s time to let him go. It’s a real shame but his injury problems continue to mount and and there’s no point keeping him on the books if he is unable to influence matches like he once did. Tottenham need to free up space to bring in the kind doc players that can take them to that next level in both European and domestic competition, and offloading Dembele would be a good first step. Also, Dembele is so well thought of in north London that the club would not want to stand in the way of what could be a very positive move for the midfielder.

Likely to happen?

China seems like a really probable destination for the Belgian. As well as sizeable payday, the Chinese league would represent a step down in intensity, and he would probably dominate most midfields he cam up against. Spurs are keen to move him on now while they might still attract a fee for him, the player is keen to move on, and this looks like a good deal for all involved. This could very well go ahead.
