Newcastle United are on the verge of signing Atlanta United ace Miguel Almiron, with the Paraguay international due to complete a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday, according to the Times.

The newspaper claims that Almiron, 24, is set to sign a £60,000-a-week deal with the Magpies and is expected to become the club’s record signing for a fee worth £20million.

It is understood that the attacker’s representatives were at St James’ Park last night (Tuesday) to witness the remarkable 2-1 win against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Good move for Newcastle?

It is at the point where it does not really matter how good Almiron is, what matter is that Rafa Benitez has finally got what he has wanted.

Almiron has reportedly been Benitez’s top transfer target and after weeks upon weeks of negotiating, Mike Ashley has finally allowed the Magpies boss to strike a deal for the Paraguayan dazzler.

Almiron has been a star of the MLS in the last few years and he played a major role in helping Atlanta win the 2018 title.

It will be a major step up for him to join a club struggling in the Premier League, but he should be an upgrade on what Benitez already has.

Likely to happen?

With this being Newcastle, there is always the chance that everything could go wrong in the last minute.

Fans will be praying that’s not the case, but they should not good their hopes up until there is an official announcement by the club and there is a picture of Almiron wearing the famous black and white stripes.

However everything suggests that this deal is all but done and should be completed in time for Thursday’s deadline.
