Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has delivered his verdict on his former club’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Villa ended the host’s unbeaten run in the Championship since October due to James Chester putting the visitors ahead in the 20th minute, which was followed by goals from Tammy Abraham and Glenn Whelan in the second half.

McGrath was clearly ecstatic about the result, declaring how “great” the work rate from every player via his personal Twitter account, whilst commenting on how he was impressed with the “balance” and “confidence” displayed within the team.

He said: “Great work rate from everyone tonight . Brilliant to see such good balance and confidence in the team . So proud of all concerned . Dean and co!”

OPINION

Aston Villa have been on fire lately and they thoroughly deserved to win by three goals on Saturday. Their potency in front of goal was incredible and it was surprising that they did not win by more goals. Whatever Dean Smith has done to this team has been admirable, as they were down in the dumps just before Steve Bruce got sacked, and now they have climbed the table into eighth place. Their morale has no doubt been boosted by their recent run of form, and now they can really start to believe that they can put in a serious bid for promotion back to the Premier League. Middlesbrough did not have a chance to get back into the match at any point, and for the first time this season, Villa fans have something to be excited about. They look like a new team, and that is all down to the man in charge.
