Manchester United utility man Ashley Young has declared his intent to win another contract with the club as he approaches the final months of his current deal.

At this moment in time the 33-year-old is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, but the Premier League winner still believes he can contribute to the Red Devils’ cause.

“That’s up to the club,” the former Aston Villa man told Sky Sports when quizzed about his future. “I feel as fit as when I was 21 years old. As long as my legs can keep taking me up and down the pitch, I’d love to stay here.”

The former England international is in his eighth season with the club, and has won an FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League to go with his sole title triumph in 2013.

Garth Crooks gushed over Young in his BBC Sport column following his weekend display.

“His goal against Fulham was his first for Manchester United for nearly a year – and the rejuvenated Ashley Young is experiencing the most extraordinary renaissance,” wrote Crooks.

OPINION

Usually you would give short shrift to a 33-year-old utility man stating his intent to win a new contract with a top team, but in Young’s case it is slightly different. The former Villa star has been a key player for the club under Jose Mourinho and has emerged as a jack of all trades for the Portuguese boss. He brings a winning mentality but also a humble demeanour which enables him to contribute in a number of different positions. For that reason it is worth handing him another one year extension. If United fans need a reason for why Young should remain at the club all they have to do is re-watch his performance in the team’s thumping 4-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday, where he scored the opener. He was tremendous against Claudio Ranieri’s side, proving that he can still contribute at a high level for the club. His versatility and current fine form mean that keeping him for another year is a must for United.
