West Ham have been discussing a potential swoop to sign Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Wanyama, 27, is one of a number of players that Spurs want to sell next month, however it is understood that the Kenya international would rather stay put in North London.

Wanyama has struggled with injuries this season, managing just seven appearances across all competitions for Tottenham.

Good move for West Ham?

Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield has looked lightweight and easy to get past this season, so it is imperative that he adds a powerhouse like Wanyama to his side in the January transfer window to keep up the club’s bid to finish as the Premier League’s ‘best of the rest’.

Wanyama could be a brilliant signing for the Hammers, but the only issue is that his injury record in the last 12 months has been very poor, with him currently nursing a knee injury that has kept him sidelined for over a month.

The Hammers already have too many injury prone players of their own and signing Wanyama could end up being a major waste of money.

However if his fitness is monitored closely and he avoids anymore injuries, it could be a masterstroke of a signing by Pellegrini.

Likely to happen?

Tottenham want Wanyama gone, West Ham want to sign him, but the midfielder seems reluctant to move, which is going to be a major sticking point if the Irons table a bid next month.

David Gold and David Sullivan have splashed the cash in 2018, but will they start 2019 in the same manner by offering Wanyama a big wage to swap Spurs for the Hammers?

It is hard to tell until a move is actually made.
