BT Sport pundit Kevin Thomson has suggested that Celtic should sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher in the January transfer window amid a shortage of centre-forwards at Parkhead.

Fletcher, 31, has been a regular for the Owls this season, appearing 19 times across all competitions.

However the Scotland international, formerly of Hibernian, Wolves and Sunderland, has only scored three goals for the Yorkshire club, and a good chunk of his game-time has come from the bench.

Greek news outlet SDNA reported in the summer that Panathinaikos were trying to sign Fletcher, but were put off by his £1.35million salary, which works out at roughly £26,000-a-week.

Although he is hardly prolific anymore and earns a lot of money, that has not stopped Fletcher’s former Hibs team-mate Thomson from pointing out that Brendan Rodgers should make an effort to sign the centre-forward next month.

“Steven Fletcher could potentially be a name that excites Brendan Rodgers,” Thomson said, as shown on BT Sport Football’s official Twitter account on Wednesday night.

“I think he’s a top player, I think he will score goals.

“I think the way Celtic play as well with having the young legs in midfield now, he would certainly give that team a platform.

“He’s had a terrific career so I’m pretty sure Brendan will know quite a lot about Steven Fletcher.”

OPINION

Is Thomson just trying to talk up a move for one of his old mates? Because there is no way that Fletcher would be a good signing for Celtic. He is 31-years-old, past his best, not in good form and judging by that report from Greece, he is earning a lot of money at Hillsborough and could cost the Hoops a lot of money. If he was firing in the goals at Sheffield Wednesday then yes, he would be a good addition with Leigh Griffiths on an indefinite leave and Odsonne Edouard potentially injury. However Rodgers should have his eyes on other targets. One striker that should be considered is Ayr United’s Lawrence Shankland, who has been in stunning form in the Scottish Championship this season. He is a known Rangers supporter, but he is only 23-years-old and has scored 27 goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this term. If Celtic are going to a striker in January and don’t want to spend much money, then forget about Fletcher, Shankland is the man to go after.
