Wolves defender Conor Coady has named Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

The Englishman came up against the Argentinian international earlier this season when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side secured an excellent 1-1 draw with the Premier League champions, and Coady is full of admiration for the City man.

“I think Sergio Aguero, I’ve played against him a couple of times now, he’s always tough,” he told the Express & Star when asked who his toughest opponent has been.

“He always starts behind you, he’s a very clever footballer. The way he does things, the way he thinks about the game, he’ll always look one way and run the other and he’s always thinking about what you’re doing too.”

OPINION

When you think about who the most maddening players to come up against must be, Aguero is pretty high on the list. Not only is the former Atletico Madrid man preternaturally gifted in front of goal, but he is always involved in link up play and has a habit of scoring in big games. He has a low centre of gravity, as well, making him so hard to defend against. He is quick, strong and a born finisher. Those are things that no defender wants to come up against. It’s no surprise, then, to see Coady name him as his toughest opponent. The Argentinian has been lighting up the top flight for years now, and so we’re almost too used to his brilliance. But for a player coming up from the Championship, facing Aguero must be a stark reminder of the quality you’ll be confronting in the top tier. Credit to Coady and his Wolves team mates, then, that they managed to keep the City star off the scoresheet earlier in the season.
