BBC Sport pundit Steven Thompson has absolutely annihilated Dedryck Boyata for his performance in Celtic’s 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.
Steven Gerrard’s side moved level on points with the Hoops at the top of the Scottish Premiership thanks to Ryan Jack’s first-half winner that deflected past Craig Gordon via Scott Brown.
Former Rangers striker Thompson was baffled by how bad Boyata played in the Old Firm derby, suggesting it was one of the worst performances he has ever seen.
“Once again it’s Boyata – it’s the stuff of nightmares from him. I’m not sure I’ve seen an afternoon like this from a professional footballer. It’s incredible to watch,” said Thompson, as quoted on the BBC Sport website.
OPINION
Boyata has been untouchable in Celtic’s starting line-up this season, when he has been fit, but it is really hard to see why when he is prone to absolutely disasterclasses like this one. The Belgium international was painful to watch at times. He couldn’t tackle, he couldn’t pass and he just looked like he had never played in the green and white hoops before, let alone played in an Old Firm derby. The centre-back has made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys this season, but Brendan Rodgers must be having a serious think about whether he should replace him or not in January before the winter break ends. Boyata’s deal does expire at the end of the season anyway so he needs replacing at some point. Why not do it at the next available opportunity? The Hoops could try and cash in on the Belgian to make a bit of cash off him before he leaves for nothing.
