BBC Sportsound pundit Michael Stewart has slammed Rangers’ summer signing Eros Grezda for failing to show his worth since his £2million move from Osijek.

Grezda, 23, has scored two goals in his 10 first team appearances for the Light Blues, but his recent performances have left fans underwhelmed, especially considering his hefty transfer fee.

Ex-Hearts star Stewart has suggested that cashing in on some of the fringe players at Ibrox could be a viable option for Rangers in the near future, but he has been left asking questions over the club’s decision to sign Grezda and Nikola Katic.

“Let’s just play silly fantasy football,” said Stewart, as shown on BBC Sounds (13:35 onwards) when asked who he thinks should be moved on by the Gers.

“Graham Dorrans, Lee Wallace at left-back, Umar Sadiq – no chance. Jordan Rossiter. [Wes] Foderingham.

“Then you look at, for example, the guys who have been brought in. Katic started like a house on fire, doing really well. He’s drifted away.

“Grezda, £2million? He’s not looked like a £2million player to me.”

OPINION

Rangers have had four managers who have tried to stamp their authority on the squad in the transfer market since returning to Scotland’s top-flight. Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha, Graeme Murty and Steven Gerrard have all moulded what is now the Gers’ squad, so there is bound to be a lot of deadwood there because of players being handed long-terms deals and not being good enough to attract interest from elsewhere. Rangers need stability in the management position before they can boast a streamlined squad that has quality throughout. Rangers fans will want signings to be made in January, but it could be in the club’s best interest to only sign one, maybe two players, and focus on getting rid of players like Dorrans, Wallace, Rossiter, Carlos Pena and other fringe players. It won’t be easy to offload them all and in some cases, contracts may have to be terminated and compromises reached. But the Gers could really benefit in the long-term and next summer if they do some smart business in January.
