Former Rangers ace Josh Windass has hailed right-back James Tavernier as a ‘top, top’ player during their win over Hearts on Sunday.

The Light Blues went behind on 27 minutes after Gareth McAuley turned into his own net but they found themselves level through Connor Goldson, who then turned provider for Alfredo Morelos.

Tavernier has endured a tough season so far but registered the assist for Goldson’s goal, and Windass has now heaped praise on his former teammate on his personal Twitter account, describing him as a ‘top top right back.’

OPINION

It is no surprise to see Windass hail Tavernier on Twitter, with the two players enjoying a good relationship during their time at Ibrox together. Both players were exemplary for Rangers over that period, and Tavernier has continued to be so since Windass left. The right-back has admittedly suffered a dip in form so far this season, but his quality does regularly shine through, particularly on set pieces. That was again the case on Sunday against Hearts as he provided the corner for Goldson’s equaliser and whipped in dangerous deliveries throughout the match. The amount of goals and assists that Tavernier manages every season is pretty incredible for a defender, and you could easily put him amongst the best in Scotland. Windass obviously rates him highly, and it is good to see him lend his backing publicly. The winger moved on to Wigan Athletic in the summer and has begun to find his feet in the Championship after a slow start.
