OPINION

Rangers blew the Scottish Premiership title race wide open once again with their first win over Celtic in 12 games on Saturday, and there were plenty of talking points to take away from the clash.

Ryan Jack was the hero as the Scotland international slotted home via a deflection off Scott Brown to give Gers a first-half lead which they managed to hold on to and secure a huge 1-0 win over their Old Firm rivals.

This is Futbol have picked out three things we learned about Rangers v Celtic below.

Halliday resurgence complete

One feature of Rangers’ season so far has been the renaissance of Andy Halliday, who looked dead and buried at Ibrox under the two previous managers. Steven Gerrard has however recognised the midfielder’s commitment and determination to improve, and has turned him into a really important player for the Gers this season. Halliday was quite simply brilliant against Celtic on Saturday, putting his body on the line on countless occasions to protect their lead in a performance which really cemented his resurgence. You could see what the win meant to him at the end, and Rangers fans will be made up for him after his struggles in recent years.

Morelos toeing the line again

Alfredo Morelos is a key player for Rangers, there is no doubt about that. The Colombian goal machine has carried the Gers at times this season, and they would certainly not be in this position without him. However, questions about his temperament remain, and there were several incidents on Saturday which perfectly illustrated that. Despite getting sent off on three occasions already this season, Morelos still decided to aim two or three petulant kicks towards Hoops players which were luckily not spotted or penalised by the officials. On another day he would have seen a straight red and ruined his side’s chances of a result. Obviously that fiery demeanour is a key part of his game, but Gerrard needs to help Morelos stamp out reckless actions like this or he will continue to cost his team with red cards.

Worrall puts in best display of career

Centre-back has been a point of contention for Gerrard this season, with Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic forming a solid partnership initially before Joe Worrall seemed to become his preferred choice over the big Croatian. There had been some murmurings of discontent over his decision to drop Katic for the Nottingham Forest loanee, but the 21-year-old proved his worth on Saturday with a storming display. The towering centre-back was dominant at the back for the Gers and outshone Goldson with his best performance yet in his young career. Hopefully he can continue this kind of form in the coming weeks and put those doubters to bed.
