Rangers have made an approach to sign Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke on loan in January, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Glasgow giants have made “formal contact” with the Merseyside giants as they look to beat a number of clubs, including Crystal Palace, to a temporary deal for the forward.

Football Insider report Rangers believe the presence of Steven Gerrard at Ibrox “could be the deciding factor in landing Solanke” and there is said to be “confidence” from the Anfield icon his club can wrap up a deal for the in-demand front man.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Solanke could terrorise Scottish defences once he adapts to the Rangers playing style. His record at England Under-21 level, including a wonderful double during the recent international break, demonstrated his calibre as well as his ability to lead the front line. Solanke is bursting with potential. He is mobile, technically sound and has a powerful, 6ft 1in (source: Transfermarkt) frame. There is a sense he needs a temporary move to ignite his career, and Rangers could be as good for him as he would surely be for club, in need of a goalscorer to take the burden off Alfredo Morelos.

Likely to happen?

It’s nip and tuck, at this point. Much will depend upon the fitness and situations of Liverpool’s senior forwards, not only Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, but the back-ups Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi. Were Origi to be sold in January, that would reduce the likelihood of Liverpool, who sold Danny Ings to Southampton in the summer, also green-lighting Solanke’s exit. Rangers could be well placed to do a deal if Jurgen Klopp allows it, given the excellent links Gerrard has with his former club.
