Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has ruled out the possibility of the club making ‘wholesale’ changes to his squad during the January transfer window, but has hinted that the Gers might make some signings.

The Glaswegians were knocked out of the Europa League in Thursday night after losing 1-0 to Rapid Wien in Austria.

The result followed a disappointing 1-1 draw against Dundee on Sunday, but Gerrard insists that he won’t look to make drastic changes to his roster this winter.

Speaking in a press conference, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account, he said: “There won’t be wholesale changes in January, if there are opportunities to bring in a player or a couple of players that can improve the squad we will look to make that happen.”

OPINION

Steven Gerrard is doing a fantastic job at Ibrox, and patience is going to be key if he is to reestablish Rangers as serious title contender. His squad is far from perfect, and realistically is probably lacking depth in a couple of positions, but an complete overhaul of personnel in January would likely do more harm than good. A couple of disappointing results in the past week have taken the shine off a brilliant start to the season, and the Gers would do well to not get too disheartened. A title challenge is not out of the question, although Celtic do hold a commanding position, but even a comfortable second-placed finish and a good cup run would show marked improvement and provide a solid foundation on which the Glaswegians could build. As long as Gerrard is given the time to coach his players and to assemble a good quality squad, things will continue to get better for Rangers.
