Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that defender Connor Goldson may miss Saturday’s Old Firm derby against Celtic.

The centre half limped off at the end of the first half of Gers’ 1-1 draw with Hibernian on Wednesday, came back on after the break, and then was substituted around the hour mark.

“Connor is sore. He’s a big doubt,” he told the Scottish Sun after the game. “There’s a lot of ice flying about the dressing room.

“There are five or six but I haven’t really had time to analyse them all individually. It’s a huge game and I need to know in the next 24 hours who’s in and who’s not. Some people trained and were okay.”

OPINION

This would be a huge blow for Rangers ahead of the biggest game of their season. Goldson has been a mainstay of Gerrard’s team all season, and the real quandary has always been about who to select alongside him. For him to potentially miss out against fierce rivals Celtic is definitely not ideal for the Ibrox club. The fact that Goldson came back on at all against Hibs tells you that we’re not looking at a serious injury here, but the worry is that he might have aggravated the knock by stepping back onto the pitch. He didn’t last long anyway, but Gerrard will be hoping it wasn’t a major error not bringing him off at the break. There will be fingers crossed on the blue half of Glasgow throughout this week because the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has been a big part of Rangers’ success so far this season. We’ll have to wait for further updates, but it would be a real shame if he misses out on Saturday.
