Steven Gerrard has been blown away by the performances of Alfredo Morelos in training, the Rangers manager has confirmed.

Speaking at his media conference on Tuesday afternoon, Gerrard gave a ringing endorsement of the attitude and popularity of the Colombia international.

He claimed Morelos has “pushed himself to max in every session” in training, including during pre-season, and he cuts a contented figure who the players “love having” in the squad.

OPINION

Gerrard has not attempted to hide his admiration for Morelos in recent weeks as the signs grow that the controversial striker can spearhead the club all the way to the SPL title. The manager has also made it clear any club wishing to take the 22-year-old off his hands would need to pay a Rangers-record fee. Gerrard has been in the game long enough to know that ambitious and successful players have their heads turned quickly by suitors and agents willing to promise them the earth. He wants his main man focused on the job at hand, and is making it clear Morelos has his total support. Certainly, the striker has been one of the outstanding players in Scottish football this season, along with teammate Allan McGregor and the likes of Callum McGregor and James Forrest in the east end of the city. Morelos has scored 17 goals from 28 matches and chipped in with a hugely impressive 10 assists. Those are the kind of top-division numbers not seen from a Rangers forward for some time.
