Rangers are set to seal a deal for Southampton midfielder Steven Davis in the January window, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The Irish newspaper claim the Scottish giants are “certain” to sign the 105-times Northern Ireland international for a second time after he was deemed surplus to requirements at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Belfast Telegraph report Davis, 33, is poised for an emotional return to Ibrox six years after quitting in the wake of the club’s liquidation.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Davis may be about to blow out 34 candles on his birthday cake on New Year’s Day but he is a proven performer who will add bundles of class and composure to the midfield. Davis demonstrated in his first spell at Rangers how he adds immense creative spark to the teams he plays for. In 200 matches for the Glasgow big hitters, he supplied a remarkable 60 assists and also weighed in with 21 goals as he spearheaded the club to three league titles.

Likely to happen?

Yes. It is likely the Belfast newspaper have close links to Davis’ camp and their claim the deal is “certain” to go through comes at a time when the player’s public stance is he is concentrating on Southampton. Behind the scenes, there appears to have been extensive activity in terms of negotiations. Given how they sealed the early-summer free transfers of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor this year, don’t be surprised at an early-window Davis agreement.
