Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara was left in stitches in Rangers’ win over Celtic after a fiercely contested drop ball between the two Glasgow rivals.

Ryan Jack’s first half goal, which took a deflection of Hoops star Scott Brown to put it past goalkeeper Craig Gordon, was enough for the Gers to seal a massively important victory at Ibrox, the three points putting the two sides level at the top of the table.

However it was the battle for a drop ball – contested between Brown and Rangers’ Scott Arfield – which impressed Kamara the most, leaving him giggling like a school child.

Laughing all the way through the replay, he said on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday (30/12, 11:24) “Old school football. Scott Arfield and Scott Brown – look at that. Have some of that.

“There’s a little bit of afters. Go on, have some of that!”

Opinion

It might have been a drop ball but the manner in which it was fought by the two players epitomised exactly what the Old Firm is about. It was a full-blooded battle simply to win back possession and it showed what a win in the derby means. On the day it was Rangers, rather than firm favourites Celtic, who showed more of that character and bottle to take the game to the opposition and the pressure the Hoops were under from the first minute was what helped Steven Gerrard’s men to victory. There is not enough of the bite shown in Saturday’s showdown in British football anymore and those playing in both England and Scotland should have a look at how the Gers and the Bhoys played to understand what passion really is. There was no diving, no half-hearted efforts and no room for error. It was a cracking encounter and you can be sure Kamara was not the only one entertained in watching on.
