PSG forward Timothy Weah has been urged to snub a January loan move to Celtic, according to French outlet Courrier Picard.

The 18-year-old forward is set to leave the Ligue 1 champions on loan this winter after confirming the news on his personal Instagram account, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

After following a flurry of Celtic players in social media it was initially assumed that the striker, son of Ballon d’Or winner George Weah, would link up Brendan Rodgers’s squad in Glasgow.

According to Courrier Picard, however, Christophe Pelissier, manager of struggled Ligue 1 side SC Amiens has personally contacted the young American international and urged him to snub Celtic and stay on the continent.

It is understood that Weah will give his answer in the coming days.

OPINION

Celtic desperately need a striker this January. Odsonne Edouard looks as if he may have finally found some form again after a tricky barren run in front of goal, and academy graduate Mikey Johnston has eased some of the burden on the Frenchman with a blistering run of goalscoring, but Brendan Rodgers will know that he still needs more. Whether or not Weah is the right man to bring in, however, remains to be seen. Edouard is only 20, Johnston is only 19. and the wisdom of bringing in an 18-year-old to support them may be called into question. There’s no saying that Weah wouldn’t be a success, and the move would be a carbon copy of the deal that initially took Edouard to Celtic Park last season, but with two young strikers already amongst his ranks, surely a move for a more experienced goalscorer would be the better decision to make.
