Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the club will find out on Thursday the severity of the injury suffered by striker Odsonne Edouard against Motherwell on Wednesday.

The Frenchman limped off during the 3-0 victory over Steve Robinson’s side, and the Hoops potentially face a striker crisis if Edouard is ruled out against Dundee on Saturday.

Rodgers provided an update: “We’ll see. He just felt a tightness round his abductor, so we’ll assess that in the next 24 hours,” he told the Daily Record after Wednesday’s game.

“It’s been unfortunate for Odsonne because he’s had to play a lot more games than I’d have wanted him to because he’s been the only real striker. We have others who can fill in and we’ll always come up with a team we think can get a result, but, hopefully, he’ll be okay.”

OPINION

Rodgers will certainly be sweating over Edouard’s fitness because he has no recognised senior strikers who can replace the youngster against Dundee if he’s ruled out. Leigh Griffiths is the other frontman in the Hoops squad, but he has been given indefinite time off to deal with personal issues. That leaves Edouard to shoulder the attacking burden at Parkhead alone, and if he has picked up a serious injury then that leaves Rodgers scrambling for a solution at the head of the Bhoys attack. The Northern Irishman could turn to Scott Sinclair or Ryan Christie in a central role if Edouard is ruled out, but obviously everyone associated with the club would rather that not be the case. Celtic will surely have to bring in another attacker in January because they cannot continue with Edouard as their only available frontman. Something needs to be done because this is a very concerning issue for Rodgers.
