Rangers have confirmed that Dapo Mebude has agreed a new deal, extending his stay at Ibrox until 2021.

The Light Blues announced via their official website on Saturday that Mebude, 17, has become the latest young star to sign new terms with the club after Stephen Kelly, Matthew Shiels, Lewis Mayo, Jordan Houston and Zak Butterworth.

Mebude is an “exciting” prospect, according to the club’s website, and academy head Craig Mulholland is thrilled to see the striker put pen to paper.

“We are delighted to extend Dapo’s contract,” said Mulholland.

“He has made great progress in the last few years having been named in a first team squad and playing up a year at international level.”

OPINION

This is very good news for Rangers because Mebude is one of the more highly-rated young players coming through the ranks at Ibrox and tying him down to a new deal ensures that no one will be able to pick him up like Chelsea did with Billy Gilmour. Mebude perhaps hasn’t shown as much potential as Gilmour did when he was at Ibrox, but there is enough there to see that the 17-year-old could be a first team regular in a few years’ time. He is already a Scotland Under-19 international and has been a regular in the Gers’ Under-20s this season. There are certainly some promising signs regarding the kids in Govan and Mulholland looks like he is doing a very good job. Graeme Murty deserves a lot of credit too for the way he has managed the development side, who recently came from two goals behind to beat Rapid Vienna’s Under-20s 4-2.
