Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has urged the club to re-sign Steven Davis from Southampton to add some much-needed leadership to the playing squad at Ibrox.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, the Gers are set to sign Davis, 33, next month with him deemed surplus to requirements at St Mary’s this season.

And Johnstone believes that the midfielder would be a superb signing for the Light Blues, who he claims also need to add more firepower to their attack.

“We need a leader. I would like to see Steven Davis come back, plus another striker is a must,” he said on the Glasgow Evening Times website.

OPINION

Davis would be a good signing for Rangers, but not on a long-term basis which is a worrying thing about this potential transfer. Fans are infatuated with signing former players and while Allan McGregor has worked out, it is different when you sign an ageing goalkeeper compared to an ageing midfielder. Davis still has a good couple of years left in him, but after the end of this season, will he better than someone like Ryan Jack? He is on big-money at Southampton, with statistics website Spotrac claiming that the Northern Ireland international earns £60,000-a-week on his deal. That contract expires at the end of the season and Davis would have to take a massive paycut to move back to Ibrox. Why would he want that deal to end six months early? His career is likely to end in the next couple of years, so taking six more months of a massive wage is quite important. If Rangers are going to sign him it might be in the summer when he’s a free agent.
