Wolves have confirmed that Ryan Bennett has signed a new two-and-a-half year deal with the club that will keep him at Molineux until 2021, according to their official website.

The defender joined the Midland’s club from Norwich City in July 2017 on a free transfer, and was a key member of the side that stormed the Championship last season.

This campaign has seen him complete 90 minutes in all but one of Wolves’ Premier League fixtures. His only absence came in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City at the end of November.

The 28-year-old established himself as a mainstay of Nuno Espirito Santo’s backline midway through last season, and has been a near ever-present from that point onwards.

OPINION

Bennett is exactly the sort of player a manager wants his squad. Understated and dependable, he is a no fuss, no thrills, old school centre-half who never seems to put a foot wrong. The 28-year-old has seized his opportunity in the Premier League with both hands, and should be proud of his performances so far this season. He will feel that he has a lot more to give, and a new deal is a brilliant show of faith from Wolves. The manner in which they conducted their transfer business last season, bringing in European stars for sizeable fees, could have heralded the end for players like Bennett, but it’s good to see that Santo believes that he can mix that continental flair with the experience and ruggedness of player like Bennett. Big things are happening at Wolves, and the defender will no doubt be ecstatic to be in on the ground floor.
