Tottenham have angered fans by trying to sell them tour tickers for a stadium they still haven’t confirmed the opening date for, according to the Times.

The report claims the club sent out emails yesterday offering fans the chance to buy gift vouchers for a stadium tour worth £30.

Spurs have still yet to announce the opening date for the new stadium, although a decision is expected in December.

Tottenham have already committed to playing their home games at Wembley until the end of this year.

The Times quoted one fan as saying, “This is unbelievable and shows the club have no regard for the feelings of fans already annoyed by continued trips to Wembley and a refund system that leaves them out of pocket. It’s nothing more than a cynical attempt to cash-in on Christmas. They are shameless.”

OPINION

You can see where the fans are coming from here. The stadium, which was supposed to be open at the start of the season, may now not open until March next year according to the Times, because of problems with the wiring. The Times states that the gift vouchers even have an expiry date of a year, which rubs salt into the wound. There’s no doubt the stadium is going to be amazing when it does open, but if any more problems are uncovered then there could be the possibility of further delays. Obviously Tottenham are a business and want to maximise revenue at this time of the year, but this should have been seen as insensitive and could have been handled better. The club are holding an event at the stadium on December 16 with up to 6,000 fans in attendance but this isn’t an official test. However, it will give the clearest indication yet of any additional problems that could scupper the opening. There is another way of looking at it. That this email is an indication that Tottenham are very confident the stadium will be open early next year. Fans can hope.
