Gary Neville has called Tottenham’s recruitment over the past few years “brilliant”.

Talking on Monday Night Football (Sky Sports, Monday, 7pm), Neville was talking about Everton and how they’ve been trying to break into the top six.

Neville compared Everton to Tottenham and said that the north London side had broken free through nailing their recruitment – from manager Mauricio Pochettino through to the players.

“Everton and Tottenham were trying to break into the top six and look at Tottenham now,” Neville said.

“It’s all down to recruitment. Tottenham have done that brilliantly in the last few years. They’re a brilliant side at the moment.”

OPINION

Tottenham were always reaching up and never achieving before Pochettino joined. And the recruitment that Neville is talking about includes Poch. He’s laid the groundwork for everything that’s happened since, turning Tottenham into a top-four side. It would be a major surprise if they finished outside the Champions League spots this season and that’s a huge step up for the north London club. The next step is silverware but Spurs are unfortunate that they’re currently up against two of the best sides the Premier League has seen. Man City seem to be head and shoulders above the rest at the moment but Spurs need to keep pushing and keep developing. A trophy is the next step in their evolution and an FA Cup or a league cup would do. They can’t stand still. With a new stadium on the way, they can’t stop strengthening the squad. Their summer transfer window was awful and it would be a tragedy if years of good recruitment was ruined by not bringing new players in. The January window will be very interesting.
