Gary Neville has heaped praise on Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson.

Talking on Monday Night Football (Sky Sports, Monday, 7pm), Neville said that the Liverpool defence had been transformed under Jurgen Klopp this season.

And, while Virgil van Dijk was getting the plaudits, Neville said it wasn’t just about him.

“Don’t get me wrong, van Dijk and Gomez are fantastic players, but Alisson has won Liverpool point after point after point,” Neville said.

“And then you look at the left-back. You just don’t get players that emerge from a club like Hull [Andrew Robertson] and go on to become world class at their next club. He’s shocked me like you wouldn’t believe.”

OPINION

Liverpool always used to be the team that you could expect goals from – at both ends. They’re still scoring them, maybe not as many as last season, but they’re still banging them in. But they’ve tightened up at the back and that’s why they’re still in contention at the top of the Premier League. They’ve only conceded six goals all season and Neville is right when he says that there are lots of reasons for this. Van Dijk and Alisson are the players they spent the big money on and both have proved they’re worth every pennt spent on them. But Robertson has made the left-back position his own and he only cost £8million from Hull. That has to go down as one of the biggest bargains of recent years as he’s gone on to become a truly world class player under Klopp.
