Jermaine Jenas believes that Christian Eriksen’s form should be a major concern for Tottenham at the moment.

The BBC pundit even put the club’s star asset on the same level as Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric due to his stunning displays recently, adding that he has more than enough ability to slot into any Premier League or Champions League side.

Jenas explains that the 26-year-old Denmark international – who was left out of the starting XI against Leicester on Saturday but made a substitute cameo – is one of the best players in the world and a masterclass against Barcelona tonight could lead to his Spurs exit.

“We have seen in the last year that Eriksen has gone to a different level and that has to be a concern for Tottenham in the long term,” Jenas told Independent.ie.

“I think he in one of the few players who would get into every Premier League side and you could argue the same in the Champions League as well and it is a credit to both the player and his manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“The trouble Tottenham might have is convincing Eriksen that he can achieve all his ambitions with them as at some point he will want to win trophies.

“If the rumours are true and Barcelona and Real Madrid are looking at him, it may not come down to wages and more about where he feels he can win the trophies that matter. That’s when Tottenham may have a problem keeping him.”

OPINION

Is there anything Eriksen cannot do? He has been sublime for Tottenham recently and he is going to be so pivotal to their top-four hopes this season. Jenas is spot on to praise him in the way that he has, as he deserves all of the plaudits that come his way – especially when being compared to Modric. Modric was recently crowned the winner of the Ballon d’Or so being likened to the gamechanging ace must be a huge compliment to Eriksen. It is easy to spot the similarities between the two players and Eriksen is no doubt heading in the same direction after blowing everyone away so far. Pochettino no doubt recognises what a talent he has on his hands and he will obviously do everything to keep the playmaker on the books if offers comes in for him in January. Jenas may have pointed out that he deserves to be “up there” as one of the “best players in the world” – he is not there just yet, but it will not be long until he will.
