Paul Robinson has backed Tottenham to secure a famous Champions League win against Barcelona (Tuesday) and qualify for the tournament’s knockout stage.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on the day of the match, the former Spurs goalkeeper insisted he is “confident” Mauricio Pochettino’s side can triumph in the Nou Camp against the Spanish champions.

Robinson recognises the enormity of the task for the north Londoners but claimed, “Why not?” in his verdict for the club’s biggest match of the season so far.

OPINION

It is a huge task for Spurs to go to the home of the Spanish champions and one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season and secure what would be a memorable victory. Two things are in the visiting sides’ favour; Barcelona have already qualified for the last-16 stage and they have already confirmed Luis Suarez will not be in their starting XI. Reports have suggested a number of other star names may also be rested, including first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. What will probably prove crucial is how many minutes, if any, Lionel Messi spends on the pitch. Forget the nonsense Ballon D’Or vote. The greatest player in the world mantle belongs to only one man. If the Argentine is watching on from the sidelines, Tottenham’s chances of getting the win that will book a knockout-stage berth is massively increased. Suarez, Ter Stegen, Philippe Coutinho, Sergio Busquets and company are outstanding players, but Messi remains the main man.
