Celtic must make a swoop to sign Newcastle United forward Elias Sorensen in the January transfer window after it was reported that the Danish teenager has turned down a new deal at St James’ Park.

According to the Sun, the 19-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and the Magpies have offered him fresh terms worth £1,500-a-week.

It is understood that Sorsensen, who has been in red-hot form for the club’s Under-23s this season, has rebuffed that offer as he wants £2,500-a-week – a wage that Celtic would easily be able to cover.

Newcastle obviously don’t want one of their Under-23s players to be earning too much money, but Sorensen is someone who could actually do a job for Brendan Rodgers in his first team this season as a third-choice striker behind Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths.

The Hoops should make a swoop to sign Sorensen either permanently in January, so Newcastle can pick up a decent fee, or offer him a pre-contract next month so that he moves to Celtic Park in the summer when his deal at St James’ expires.

It would make perfect sense from the Bhoys’ point of view because Sorensen is a young forward who is showing a huge amount of potential south of the border.

He has scored 15 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies’ Under-23s this season and is he probably on the verge of breaking into Rafa Benitez’s first team plans.

By the end of the season and with a bit of first team experience under his belt, he could be a regular in Celtic’s matchday squads and will go on to be worth a lot more money that Rodgers paid for him.
