Newcastle United legend and BBC pundit Alan Shearer has slaughtered the quality of the Magpies’ clash against Fulham on Saturday by joking that the game is lucky to be last on Match of the Day.

Shearer’s old side played out a lacklustre 0-0 draw with the Cottagers at St James’ Park in the last game for both sides before Christmas, with just two shots on target coming courtesy of the visitors.

Fellow BBC presenter Gabby Logan joked that the game should be shown first rather than last on Match of the Day and Shearer issued a damning verdict of the game, writing on his personal Twitter account: “It was that bad it’s lucky to be last!!”

Opinion

As a born and bred Newcastle fan Shearer knows how important a point could be to the Magpies come the end of the season but that has not stopped him from hammering just how dull the game was. There will hardly be any highlights for the Match of the Day team to analyse and you can be certain there will not be too many supporters – even those of both a Newcastle and Fulham persuasion – who take the time to watch on. What is certain is that both sides need to improve dramatically if they are going to be able to drag themselves away from the relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League. These are the sort of games that both sides should be desperately looking to pick up all three points and to see such a dire display of football will be hugely disappointing to both sets of fans. Not the sort of Christmas clash anyone wants to see – hopefully things improve when their teams return to action in a couple of days.
