Newcastle United’s deal for Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron is being held up because of the midfielder’s personal demands, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Tyneside for some time, but the reporter claims that a potential transfer has hit a stumbling block due to his unwillingness to agree to the terms being offered to him by the Magpies.

In a tweet posted to his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon, Nixon said: “Almiron demands an issue. Need to sort.”

The Paraguayan international was named the MLS’ Most Valuable Player after helping his side lift the title in just their second season of competition.

OPINION

The manner in which this deal has ground to a halt following the ferocity of the rumours linking Almiron to Newcastle earlier the month should concern Magpies’ fans. It always seemed a little too good to be true that a player reportedly linked with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham would move to Newcastle without any complication, and so this snag will not come as too much of a surprise to many of the Toon Army faithful. If it is a matter of the player demanding too much then the club will not wan to be held to ransom, but equally, given Mike Ashley’s propensity for stinginess, it would be no surprise if he was trying to low ball his target. At some point the owner is going to have to bite the bullet and realise that he has to spend big if he wants to keep the Magpies in the Premier League. Now might be the best time for him to have that epiphany.
