Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has said that the club still have not found the ideal player to provide cover to Paul Dummett at left-back.

Since Dummett was injured playing for Wales a few weeks ago, the need for a new left-back was more apparent than ever, but the Spaniard has revealed that the Magpies are still to seek out the player who would be perfect for the side.

Benitez said that United have been searching for the ideal candidate for a while, but it has come to no dividends just yet.

“It’s a position we have been looking at for a while but still we haven’t found someone ideal for this position,” he said, as quoted by the Chronicle.

OPINION

The club are in dire need of a new left-back, but they better get a move on in regards to their search, otherwise they are going to run out of time just like they did in the summer transfer window. They will want to avoid a last-ditch deal at all costs as such deal will not guarantee them the best quality player that is out there. The window may not open until January but the clock is steadily ticking – and Benitez will regret it if he does not short list anyone really soon. The manager had to resort to using the likes of Javier Manquillo as cover for Dummett for part of his absence and he no doubt recognises that is the worst case scenario. In order to compete with their rivals – for example West Ham – they need to have strength and depth in almost every single area. First stop – find a left-back.
