Former Manchester City player Rodney Marsh has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford, but suggested that the forward should consider leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season.

The 21-year-old starred in the Reds’ 4-1 thrashing of lowly Fulham on Saturday afternoon, laying on assists for the first two goals before rounding off the rout with a sublime strike of his own with eight minutes left to play.

The England international registered only his third goal of the season against Claudio Ranieri’s side, and has struggled to cement a starting position for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Taking to his personal Twitter account shortly after the final whistle, Marsh, who played 118 times for bitter rivals City said: “Thought Rashford was outstanding today, hope he gets a move to a big club in the summer…..”

OPINION

When Rashford burst onto the scene a few years ago there were direct comparisons made between him and Kylian Mbappe. Since then the two have enjoyed somewhat different rates of progression. While Mbappe was a genuine contender for a Ballon d’Or, Rashford has struggled to ensure a regular starting place at Old Trafford. Partially, this his not his fault. United are a club in disarray and there are few players who have managed to thrive in an increasingly bizarre and hostile club environment. To this end, Marsh could be right. It would be a shame to look back on Rashford’s career in years to come and wonder just what might have been. Perhaps, the best thing for him to do would be to look elsewhere to aid his development. That being said, the young forward is United through and through, and it would take a lot to tempt him away from his boyhood club. The 21-year-old has, in some ways, been the victim of his own precociousness, and it would not be unfair to suggest that a little bit of patience and awareness of his tender years might still be the best policy to see him reach the top. If that is the case, then United could still be where he needs to be.
