Man United legend Rio Ferdinand has sent a five-word Twitter message accompanying a picture of Alex Ferdinand and David Gill at Anfield during the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool.

The former manager and director were watching the game from the stands and a still of them painted a pretty worrying picture of the state of the United team.

Ferdinand sent a tweet with the image saying, “A penny for their thoughts”.

OPINION

They say a picture paints a thousand words and if anyone saw this without knowing what was going on at the game, they’d know things weren’t going well for United. Forget the scoreline as it’s almost irrelevant. The real issue for United was the absolute dominance from Liverpool. Not even the most ardent fan would be able to pretend this was anything but men against boys and for Ferguson that must have been the hardest thing to swallow. His United team would have got about Liverpool from the off and let them know they were in a game. Mourinho’s players looked scared and players like Romelu Lukaku were bullied. It was always going to be hard to replace Ferguson but no one would have predicted quite how hard they would struggle and how much money they would waste trying to get back to the top. On the evidence of yesterday they’re so far off the pace it’s frightening.
