OPINION
Rarely does a player endure such unanimous criticism from his own fans and still play week after week as Marcos Alonso has this season. Consistently he has disappointed so far this campaign, and yet he has somehow remained an ever-present in the Chelsea line-up under Mauricio Sarri. The Spaniard has looked lethargic and defensively poor in a side that has for the most part looked impressive, and you can’t help wondering if that long unbeaten run the Blues enjoyed at the start of the season has helped mask some of his flaws. Sarri is not short of alternatives at left-back, and could call upon the Brazilian Emerson Palmieri to freshen things up. Alonso is not a bad player, but he is clearly lacking confidence and looks fatigued, and it is a mystery as to why his boss is unwilling to give him a break and a chance to recharge his batteries.

Alonso not defending well enough and Emerson is pretty decent going forward… Not the first time Alonso has been poor in recent weeks. Sarri needs to see this at some point.

David Luiz and Marcos Alonso on the same side is essentially an open door. #MCICHE
